asnapeEveryone at Blackfriars would like to say Goodbye and Good Luck to Andy Snape.

Andy started at Blackfriars in September 2008. His first role saw him head of retail and the community shop in which he offered a variety of awards and accreditation opportunities. Andy consistently championed the college enormously in a variety of roles. He has led educational visits and been on residentials to Spain and PGL. Andy taught manufacturing, woodwork and horticulture and he has been a lead figure in ensuring that the students (and staff) fulfil their recycling responsibilities. Andy also led Blackfriars to numerous regional finals and awards in the young enterprise competition. Andy was also a tremendous form tutor throughout his 8 years. He supported the students every day with enthusiasm, kindness and commitment. Thank you for everything that you have done Andy and best wishes for the future.

bfb buttonAuditions are now in full swing for this year’s X Factor at Blackfriars FE Academy. Students were asked to sign up to audition to be Blackfriars FE very own X Factor.

Everyone who signed up had the opportunity to audition during their Performing Arts lessons. Only those successful received one of Darren’s golden tickets, which sent them through to the next round.

Students continue to perform in front of the judges and are looking forward to the next stage of the audition process. We are approaching the quarter finals and the competition is heating up. There has been lots of fun, and students have taken the competition seriously.

Find out our winner in the next Blackfriars Academy Chronicle.

lemonade 01Most people know that fresh lemonade is delicious and it is a good source of vitamin C that helps to fight against colds, especially during winter.

On the other hand, few people know how easy it is to make fresh lemonade from scratch, and that you can even use a Makaton language recipe card.

Group 15.1 from Blackfriars FE Academy has created a fellowship called “Friends of Makaton”. All of them are following the OCR unit Community Action with great enthusiasm. The students have selected to focus within our own school community. They have worked with group 13.4 - who are really good at Makaton - and they thought that it would be a good idea to learn and spread more Makaton signs around the Food Technology room and the Community Café. To launch this new initiative, group 15.1 decided to invite group 13.4 to teach them how to make fresh lemonade using a recipe in Makaton. (Thanks to Steve Catchick, tutor of our guests, who supported with all lemonade 02necessary information we needed for our project).

Everybody loved the experience (and the lemonade of course). We intend to make this recipe the first recipe for a future cooking book in Makaton language to be shared within all schools in our Multi Academy Trust.
