The complex needs of our students mean they learn in a very different way.  Students in PMLD Class 4 learn through encountering and experiencing using sensory   stimuli. We deliver learning using thematic lessons that fit in with our sensory curriculum. We create a positive learning environment within the class room making sensory installations that incorporate sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.


This group of students learn best when they are exposed to repeated encounters and experiences. Some of the group may learn through structured play, exploring wet and dry sand, others may learn more effectively through functional activities, choice making and requesting using individual means of communication, yet others within the group will respond to our thematic topic of a Magic Carpet Ride.

Our immersive sensory curriculum is differentiated to meet those individual and collective learning needs.



Over the past year Class 4’s thematic topic of A Magic Carpet Ride has taken us to India, the North and South Poles and the sun of Italy. We have experienced and   encountered the smells, tastes, sights, sounds and textures of these wonderful places.

To further enhance the learning experience of the students we have visited an Indian Temple, the Chill Factor and the seaside in Llandudno (not exactly the Italian Riviera as the school budget would not allow this).

We use these trips to reinforce the students learning by transferring our sensory interaction and input of the class room into real life.
