History

Our students gain knowledge and experience of Britain’s past and the wider world. Through History our students are encouraged to think perceptively and critically and to explore their curiosity. Students are helped to understand people’s lives and societies as well as their own identity and the challenges of our times. Recognising the particular importance of first-hand experience for motivating and engaging pupils with learning difficulties, our students undertake many different activities and educational visits. Students participate in drama and role-play, as well as games, cooking, crafts, cross-curricular days etc. E.g. Following a visit to Nantwich Museum where pupils made model Tudor houses, we re-created the Fire of London, and set them all ablaze! We also aim to challenge and extend our more able pupils by engaging with history.

Students will develop their ability to tell the story of what happened in the past. They will describe how people lived in the past and explain why it was like that. Students look for what has changed and what has stayed the same and work as detectives using evidence. They will communicate what they have found out in a variety of different ways.

In Key Stage 3 students follow the National Curriculum History programmes of study:

In Key Stage 4 History is a core subject.  It is taught by a subject specialist teacher to either Entry Level or Level 1 certificate. The course covers different aspects of British and World History in the 20th Century. Visits have included a residential stay in Belgium and France to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and day visits to RAF Cosford, The U-Boat story and the Houses of Parliament.
